Our new first presidency

I was thinking that we'd have to wait until Conference in April before we'd hear who our new prophet would be.

I was so wrong!

They announced it this morning ... and I'm so glad for the internet.

Deseret News
has the story ... but in short:

Picture from Deseret News. ... Really, I've not been to Utah. How could I take it myself. I'm not all cool and neat enough to be all buddy-buddy with the big dogs. I just admire from afar. :D

Thomas S. Monson (center, with the dark hair), as has been tradition (since he was the previous first counselor ... and so far, the first counselor has gone on to be prophet. As long as the prophet hasn't outlived him. It doesn't HAVE to be that way. The rest of the quorum could always take a vote.), is our new prophet.

Henry B. Eyring (left, the one smiling and all adorable) is his first counselor ... He was the second counselor before Hinckley passed away. (Note: I LOVE President Eyring. He's AMAZING.)

Deiter F. Uchdorf (on the right with the silver-shot hair)is the new second counselor. This is a bit of a surprise ... he hasn't been in the quorum of the twelve apostles for that long. It's a good thing, though. It does go to show that our church IS an international church (Uchdorf's from Germany ... and the Czech Republic). This will be an interesting change ... and I'm happy to see it.

I know that there were some people on the bloggernacle hoping for Kikuchi to be called ... I think he's probably very happy just being a seventy. ^_^

I really love my church. And I have complete faith that we are in good hands (our new presidency and the Lord's). I know that I can fully support these men in their new callings. I'm glad that we can receive guidance from our prophet and all those that the Lord has called. It's a good thing. It makes me happy and secure.

(for those of you who have NO idea what I'm taking about ... just ask. I'll try to explain all the church-stuff as well as I can. ^_^)

Just a quick correction. It isn't the first councilor that becomes President of the Church, it is the most senior Apostle. President Monson was the Senior Apostle who also happened to be first councilor. Boyd K Packer is now the most senior Apostle. That is why he was named the new President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles instead of the acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve, which he was previously since President Monson was in the First Presidency. I love how Heavenly Father has such wonderful order to his church.

Did your ward read the process for choosing a new prophet in sacrament meeting last Sunday? I had no idea that the quorum of the twelve apostles could opt to lead the church as a quorum instead of calling a new prophet or disband the church entirely! Quite frankly, I was shocked.

Also, our stake is doing something called 40 Days, 40 Minutes that sounds suspiciously like lent. For 40 Days before Easter, we're supposed to spend 40 minutes every day doing scripture study, having family prayer, or whatever. Having grown up Catholic, this makes me a little uncomfortable. These are things we should be doing every day, not just the 40 days before Easter. At least we don't kick it off by having ashes smeared on our foreheads!

Gah! This got long! Maybe I should have just sent you an email!

momof6o6, Thanks for the correction!

I'm glad that you're helping me not to spread false doctrine. ^_^

You're right, it always has been the most senior apostle (the one who's served in the quorum the longest, like Thomas S. Monson), not always the first counselor. ^_^

And I totally agree, it's wonderful the order that we have. Makes me feel all secure and safe.

FMLP,

No, I don't think they read it at church ... but since we were out in the foyer with the kidlets, I'm not all too sure what they DID say (with four wards in one building, there's a ward getting out during our Sacrament meeting. So I don't get to hear a whole lot. And, with the munchkins ... well, I don't even get to pay attention to all that I do hear. *sigh* ^_^)

I didn't know that the quorum could make those decisions, either. I'd never even thought of the possibility of the church being disbanded. Wow.

Well, I hope your Lent-but-not goes well. Happy Fat Tuesday! ^_^
